Description

Roosevelt forwards a letter from a rebel veteran of Chickamauga to a future Titanic survivor

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, July 20, 1908. Letter to Archibald Gracie concerning his upcoming book The Truth About Chickamauga. In full: “I am glad to hear about the progress of your work. Is the enclosed letter to Luke Wright all right?” In very good condition, with central horizontal fold lightly affecting signature, a mild shade of uniform toning, and a rusty paperclip mark to top edge. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In 1912, Gracie would find himself onboard the Titanic, surviving the tragedy but so affected by it that he would die eight months later, posthumously publishing a book on the topic.
