Two items: TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, May 21, 1954. Eisenhower writes James S. Copley of Copley Press. In part: “Thank you for your two recent letters. While I am always a little astonished to find someone who really wants a reproduction of the ‘portrait’ I did of Lincoln, I have nonetheless asked that a copy of it be sent to you today.” Accompanied by a limited edition print of the aforementioned portrait, 13 x 17, with 850 copies made by Hallmark, signed and inscribed at the bottom border in fountain pen, “Fr. James S. Copley, with warm personal regard, Dwight D. Eisenhower.” In overall fine condition, with a large block of light even toning over much of the letter and show-through from mounting remnants on the reverse. During his first Christmas in the White House in 1953, Eisenhower painted a portrait of Abraham Lincoln to be used as his official Christmas card. Despite Ike’s ‘astonishment’ of Copley’s admiration of his talents, the design was extremely well received. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
