Before Tarzan, Burroughs explores the world of science fiction via A Princess of Mars

DS, signed “Edgar Rice Burroughs,” two pages, 8.5 x 13, April 12, 1917. An agreement between the author and A. C. McClurg & Company concerning Burroughs’ ‘A Princess of Mars’ manuscript. In part: “The said Publish agrees upon its part to print and publish said manuscript in book form at its own expense…and to sell the same at a retail or catalogue price of one dollar and thirty cents ($1.30) and agrees to manage the sale and distribution of said book, and the advertising and general publicity of the same, and to care for the distribution of the editorial copies thereof, and agrees to pay to said Author Royalties as follows—(a) Twelve and one-half per cent (12-1/2%) on the first five thousand (5000), (b) Fifteen percent (15%) from five thousand (5000) upward.” In fine condition, with mild creasing and folds with one fold passing through his signature. Accompanied by an unsigned memorandum regarding British publishing rights. Published prior to Tarzan, “A Princess of Mars” was part of the author’s Barsoom series and is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
