Description

Shortly before his 1848 vice presidential nomination, Fillmore endorses postponement of a sale in his capacity of New York’s visionary comptroller

ALS signed “Millard Fillmore Comp,” one page, 7.75 x 10, Albany, June 15, 1848. Letter to Charles Stuart, State Engineer and Surveyor. In part: “I have received a petition from Mr. Henry Fitzhugh & others asking for a postponement of the sale of blocks…Mr. Fitzhugh will explain to you. We request therefore that you will postpone the sale of the above blocks that the Petitioners may have an opportunity to apply to the Legislature for relief.” In good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, portions of text fairly light but legible, with a portion of one line illegible, scattered moderate toning and soiling, and several small spots.

Fillmore dispatched this letter in his capacity as comptroller for New York State, the first to be elected by a general ballot. Though serving only one year in that post, Fillmore nonetheless revised New York's banking system and made it a model for the future National Banking System. Nominated for the vice presidential slot in the November 1848 presidential election, delegates believed Fillmore’s presence would help the Whig Party carry the populous state of New York. An interesting letter dating to early in Fillmore’s slow political rise that would end two years later in the presidency. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
