President Grant appoints a deputy postmaster for his adopted home state of Illinois

Partly-printed DS as president, signed “U. S. Grant,” one page, 15.75 x 10.25, December 10, 1873. Presidential appointment of Joseph S. Baner as “Deputy Postmaster at Mason City, in the State of Illinois, and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfill the duties of that office.” Countersigned by Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. Unusually clean Seal of the United States attached. Double-matted with a Pach Bros. portrait to an overall size of 28.5 x 17.25. Intersecting folds and a block of even toning covering most of the document, otherwise fine condition. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
