ALS as president, two pages, 5.25 x 8.25, United States Senate Memorandum letterhead, September 1, 1989. The president writes “Chick.” In full (with a few words underlined for emphasis): “Thanks for saving my life!! Poor Mrs. Hill had been standing that lonely vigil next to Dr. Crawford Long (he was in bronze) for about 3 hours—a massive screw-up that was ended happily when you showed up! Here’s a tiny souvenir to say ‘Thanks.’” In fine condition.
The presidency runs at a hectic pace—so hectic that visitors to Washington, D.C. like poor Mrs. Hill are sometimes forgotten by the chief executive...forced to stand a ‘lonely vigil’ in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the US Capitol, next to a monument to a 19th century Georgia physician. Correspondence from Bush during his term in office is very scarce, with this a stellar example of a penitent president thanking a colleague for saving him from even greater embarrassment.
