Description

Heavyweight champ Dempsey gives a photo "To my pal James J. Corbett"

Boxing Hall of Famer (1895-1983) who held the world heavyweight title from 1919-1926. Vintage 7.5 x 9.5 lightweight photo of Dempsey and Corbett posing outdoors in three-piece suits, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, as champion, "To my pal James J. Corbett, With sincerely Best Wishes from Jack Dempsey, Heavey Weight Champion Jan 8 - 20." Photo is affixed to an identical size sheet. In very good condition, with a couple small edge tears, chip to bottom edge, and several noticeable creases to upper portion, mostly affecting background.

Dempsey had captured the heavyweight title from Jess Willard a mere six months before inscribing this photo to 'Gentleman Jim,' his ring predecessor. Not having to defend his title again until September 1920, Dempsey traveled around the country, making publicity appearances with circuses, staging exhibitions, and starring in a low-budget Hollywood movie. Both men had shared the stage as well as the ring, as Corbett himself appeared in some low-budget films, including The Midnight Man and The Prince of Avenue A, as well as in minstrel shows where he wore blackface in skits and spoke about boxing. This one-of-a-kind pugilistic prize is amazing on several fronts, capturing not only two boxing heroes but representing Demsey's respect and admiration for Corbett. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
