Flight-flown printed fabric American flag, 5.5 x 4, flown aboard Apollo 14 during its flight to the moon. The flag is affixed to a 19 x 14.5 piece of matte board along with a vintage personal-crew patch and glossy color photo. The board is signed and inscribed in black felt tip by command module pilot Stuart A. Roosa, “This flag was flown to the lunar surface onboard the lunar module ‘Antares.’ It landed on Feb. 5, 1971 at Fra Mauro. Apollo 14—Jan. 31–Feb. 9, 1971. To Al Bishop with many thanks for your friendship. Stuart A. Roosa.” In fine condition, with Roosa’s signature a bit light and tiny bits of chipping to the edges of the photo’s emulsion. Originating from the nation’s third lunar landing mission, this is one of the earliest known ‘lunar surface’ notated flown flags in an astronaut’s own hand. Just about all known flags flown on prior lunar landing missions never indicated it was on the moon’s surface, but simply flown to the moon. Bishop, the original recipient, was friend and confidant to many of the Apollo astronauts and created specially produced cachet envelopes that the crews of Apollo 12 through Apollo 16 carried with them on their lunar voyages.
