Original remnant of gold-colored Mylar insulation used on the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, approximately .75 x 1, affixed to a printed 8.5 x 11 explanatory sheet signed in blue ink, “Buzz Aldrin.” The letter reads in part: “This segment of Mylar insulation was removed from the Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia after splashdown by NASA recovery personnel back in July 1969. It was presented to me as a memento from the flight…This Mylar experienced the searing heat of re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere on July 24, 1969. Most of the Mylar coating burned off during this period, but some parts remained, as displayed on this letter.” In fine condition. A much larger piece than typically found and originating from Aldrin’s personal collection, this material helped keep the Apollo 11 crew safe as they returned from their historic mission.
