Description

“I leave tomorrow morning for Genl. Grant’s Hq —One of Grant’s favorite officers prepares to meet

Union Army general (1834–1864). War-dated ALS signed “Ransom,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8.25, June 20, 1864. Writing Colonel J. T. Tucker, in part: “Please leave my report of battle of Sabine Cross Roads at the house. I leave tomorrow morning for Genl. Grant’s Hq.” In very good condition, with scattered creasing and soiling (heavier at the bottom left corner), old tape repair, partial separation of the two pages, and show-through from mounting remnants on the reverse of the second page. Ransom was wounded four times during the Civil War, including Fort Donelson and Shiloh. When he died of dysentery four months after writing this letter, it is said that Grant wept at the news of his passing. A great Civil War-dated letter mentioning Ulysses S. Grant, whom Ransom affected greatly, even years after his death. RRAuction COA.
