Bandleader and composer nicknamed ‘The March King.’ A brilliant man who sought to reach a mass audience through his music, he formed his own band in 1892 and carefully selected the music to include in his band’s repertoire. Brief ALS, one page, 2.25 x 4.75, February 16, 1912. Sousa writes to a Mr. Aronson. In part: “Your splendid idea to erect here in Washington a ‘Palace of Art’ deserves the commendation of every American who believes in this country’s future. I compliment you on your conception and earnestly hope it may come to a quick and successful fruition.” In fine condition, with vertical crease, trimmed edges, and light show-through from a tiny piece of old tape on the reverse. Splendid association between the March King and America. Accompanied by an unsigned FDC commemorating Sousa. Beautiful connection between the March King and his adoration of the American dream.
