Flight-flown printed fabric American flag, 6 x 4, flown aboard Apollo 17 during what was to be the final flight to the moon. Flag is affixed by its corners to a 14 x 11 certificate stating “This flag was carried to the Moon aboard the spaceship America Apollo XVII , December 7-19, 1972,” and later signed in black felt tip by Chris Kraft, director of the Johnson Space Center, adding the date January 1981. The flag was originally presented to Donald K. Slayton “in recognition of your outstanding contribution to the manned space flight program.” Slayton was one of the original Mercury astronauts and later a NASA official. A gold foil NASA seal is affixed. In fine condition, with a slight crease in the middle of the certificate, spot of toning to the paper, and an even block of toning to the flag. Wonderful association between one of the original astronauts and his successors in space. RRAuction COA.
