Description

Benjamin Champney

Artist (1817-1907) who portrayed New Hampshire’s White Mountains for over five decades. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 9.5, March 2, 1851. Letter to Miss Georgiana Louther of Fryeburg, Maine. In small part: “I have just completed a picture which is rather an idealized view of your beautiful intervals in haymaking—and it is considered my best picture. A shower is seen approaching. Giving a dark & threatening aspect to the distant…hills—but the sun still shines brightly on the broad meadows & the busy haymaking…We are anxious to have our infant institution grow strong.” Leather matted and framed, so all four pages may be viewed, along with the original transmittal envelope, to an overall size of 21.5 x 22.5. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and mild staining to pages from moisture exposure. Oversized. RRAuction COA.
