Description

Robbins Medal created for Columbia’s final, fatal mission

Space Shuttle Columbia STS-107 Robbins Medal, approximately 1.5 x 2 with a raised design on the face of the mission insignia, and the mission and astronauts’ names. The reverse of the obviously unflown sterling silver medal is engraved with the January 16, 2003, launch date, February 1, 2003, re-entry date, and the names of the astronauts who perished. Serial numbered “289” around the edge. Normal condition. Made by the Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts, astronauts who are in line for a flight have the option of purchasing the medallions for themselves, family, and friends as personal souvenirs. The medals are made available only to the astronauts. At the conclusion of a flight, the tokens are sent back to Robbins, where they are engraved on the reverse, polished, numbered, and returned to the astronauts. The dyes are later destroyed. RRAuction COA.
