Description

“The issue of homosexuals in the military is a difficult one. However, we are working on, and I believe we can find, a solution”

TLS signed “Colin L. Powell,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff letterhead, May 12, 1993. The general references the military’s ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ policy and America’s military strength worldwide. In part: “The issue of homosexuals in the military is a difficult one. However, we are working on, and I believe we can find, a solution that will protect the interests of all without damaging the cohesion of US forces or our ability to meet global commitments. Now that the threat of the Cold War has gone away, the United States no longer needs to maintain military forces capable of responding to a lengthy global war. We are changing our force and base structures at home and abroad to meet the immediate challenges of those conflicts.” In fine condition, with strips of even light toning at the top and bottom borders.
