Description

In the midst of the War of 1812, Madison and Monroe authorize the schooner Pilot to seize British ships

Partly-printed war-dated DS, signed by Madison as president, “James Madison,” and Monroe as secretary of state, “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 15.75 x 12.5, April 1, 1813. President Madison commissions “the private armed Schooner called the Pilot…owned by Samuel Taylor, Samuel Smith and James A. Buchanan Merchants of Baltimore, State of Maryland mounting six carriage guns, and navigated by twenty eight men, hereby authorizing Matthew Clarke Captain and Charles O’Hardy Lieutenant of the said Schooner and the officers and crew thereof to subdue, seize and take any armed or unarmed British vessel, public or private, which shall be found within the jurisdictional limits of the United States or elsewhere on the high seas…and such captured vessel, with her apparel, guns and appurtenances, and the goods or effects which shall be found on board the same, together with all British persons and others who shall be found acting on board, to bring within some port of the United States.” Intersecting folds, scattered edge wear, tears, and paper loss, two small tears to body, scattered light toning and foxing, a bit lightly affecting Madison’s signature, and some pinhole areas of paper loss, otherwise very good condition. Both signatures are largely unaffected by the document’s flaws. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
