Prominent abolitionist leader (1810–1903) known as the “Lion of Whitehall.” An ardent supporter of Lincoln, he served as American Minister to Russia from 1862 to 1869, in which capacity he was instrumental in negotiations for the purchase of Alaska. Original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo by Louis Schlegel of Richmond, Kentucky, signed on the reverse in black ink, “Truly, Cassius M.
