American lawyer and statesman (1818–1901) who prosecuted Jefferson Davis after the Civil War, defended Andrew Johnson during his impeachment trial, and served as secretary of state under Hayes. Original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo by C. M. Bell, signed under his image in black ink, “Wm. M.
