Description

Mingus licenses ‘Revelations,’ the song that established him as one of the foremost jazz composers

Influential jazz bassist and composer (1922–1979) whose complex, innovative works meld elements of jazz, classical, and gospel. DS, three pages, 8.5 x 11, January 20, 1977. Five year licensing agreement between Mingus and Margun Music Inc., in which Mingus licenses the company to “print, publish, copy, and vend the musical composition entitled ‘Revelations’ composed by Charles Mingus.” Signed in blue ballpoint on the third page by Mingus, and also signed by music publisher Gunther Schuller, a foremost scholar on jazz, conducting, and composition. Mingus has also initialed a handwritten change on the second page. In fine condition, with some light creases, staple hole to top left corners, and mild toning to left edge of pages. Many consider ‘Revelations’ Mingus's first hint of the greatness he'd achieve in the orchestral medium. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
