Description

Recently appointed Governer-General Cornwallis orders a payment to an estate

English general (1738–1805) who fought against Washington during the American Revolution and was finally defeated at Yorktown. The crushing defeat aroused much antiwar sentiment in England, and hostilities thereafter tapered off until the final withdrawal of British troops in 1783. Partly-printed DS, signed “Cornwallis,” one page, 14 x 8.25, December 7, 1786. Cornwallis orders the payment of 500 pounds sterling to Robert Taylor, Executor to the Estate of Captain James Jameson. Signed at the conclusion by Cornwallis, and countersigned by two others. Document has been professionally backed. In very good condition, with three vertical folds, slight paper loss to top edge, notations along left edge, and mild toning. A nicely signed example from Cornwallis’s post-Revolutionary War career. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
