Thorp, Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs of the United States “with full and all manner and power of authority for and in the name of the United States…to meet and confer with any person or persons duly authorized by the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands…and sign a memorandum of agreement…relating to certain claims with respect to dollar overpayments.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by Truman, and his Secretary of State George C. Marshall. Simply matted and framed to an overall size of 14.5 x 18.25. In fine condition. The handsome embossed white wafer seal is intact.
Thorp was an economist who worked as an advisor in both domestic and foreign affairs not only Truman but also to his predecessor, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Under the Truman Administration, Thorpe helped develop the Marshall Plan after World War II, served as a special adviser on economic matters at the Paris Peace Conference, special adviser on economic matters at the New York meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers, and American representative to the United Nations General Assembly from 1947 to 1948. An opponent of Soviet oppression, Thorpe resigned in 1952 during Senator Joseph McCarthy’s investigations into alleged Communists in the federal government.
