Description

Martial arts instructional booklet owned and annotated by Lee

Bruce Lee’s personally owned Chinese-language martial arts instructional booklet, 6 x 8, 59 pages, published by Vih Mei Book Company of Hong Kong [no date]. The front cover features a man performing a high chest kick on his opponent, Lee signing at lower left, “Bruce Lee Shiu Loong,” and adding “The Chinese twenty-four foot fighting technique,” probably a reference to the title, at upper right. Lee has also signed on the back cover and at the top of page 32, “Property of Bruce Lee, 1122 Jefferson St., Seattle, Wash.,” and has made an incomplete notation on the inside front cover, “This book deals mainly on foot technique and is….” The book contains images of different pressure points on the human anatomy, as well as proper techniques, body movements, and striking positions; Lee has numbered several images and outlined some in red ink. A blank toward the back bears a single vertical line of untranslated Chinese text in pencil, likely in Lee’s hand. In good condition, with soiling and edge tears to front cover, soiling and brushing to front signature, missing corner tips to opening pages, creasing and soiling to back cover (lightly affecting signature), and light overall toning. As direct an association between Lee and the martial arts as you will find, at a time when the master was a student. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
