In full: “Mr. Clay's compliments to Mr Cutts and he will be much obliged to him to deliver the enclosed packet to Mr Gales or Mr. Seaton. What do you mean at Washington to do with Pensacola? The event of its occupation must be most embarrassing. Mrs. Clay unites with Mr. Clay in respectful compliments to Mrs. Cutts.” Partial separations along intersecting folds, scattered toning and soiling, tape and adhesive remnants to edges, and a few areas of paper loss to edges, otherwise very good condition. In 1818, Andrew Jackson invaded Florida, destroyed Seminole villages, captured Pensacola, and overthrew the Spanish governor. Because Jackson had taken such bold action without presidential authorization, Secretary of War John C. Calhoun and others privately urged that he be reprimanded. However, no action was ever taken.
