American Quaker poet and abolitionist (1807–1892) best known for such works as ‘Barbara Frietchie’ and ‘Maud Muller,’ which includes the immortal line, ‘For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: ‘It might have been!’ ALS signed “John G. Whittier,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8.5, November 14, 1881. Brief letter to an admirer. In full: “I enclose a bit of one of my cravats. I wear plain black only.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, and a uniform shade of mild toning. Accompanied by a 5 x 5.5 swatch of fabric from one of Whittier’s cravats, embroidered with his last name and a white floral pattern (presumably done by the recipient). RRAuction COA.
