American writer and diplomat (1819–1891) who, after a long and successful career as a poet, satirist, and essayist, served as minister to the court of Spain. Original vintage 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite seated portrait of Lowell by Black and Batchelder of Boston, and so noted on reverse, signed in the lower border in black ink, “J. R.
