Description

Hemingway writes his banker concerning For Whom the Bell Tolls royalties

TLS, one onionskin page, 8.5 x 11, Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba letterhead, August 14, 1941. Letter to Mr. Blake of the Guaranty Trust Company of New York. In part: “Enclosed please find a warrant for 40 Rights to subscribe for five hundred dollars worth of Debenture Bonds American Telephone and Telegraph Company, and a receipt for 50 Rights which the Guaranty Trust Company has received and is holding for me.

Will you please subscribe to the Bonds to which these Rights entitle me and debit my checking account with the Guaranty Trust. Could you also arrange to have all dividends and interest received for me by the Guaranty Trust, put in a special dividend account instead of into my current checking account? It will be easier for me to keep track of them this way.

I expect to receive a considerable sum from Chas. Scribner’s Son on August 21 and when this is deposited I will want to be putting the major part of it into my special tax account. As soon as it is deposited, I will advise you as to this. Thank you very much for helping me with these matters.”

Two office stamps over last name of signature, slightly trimmed right edge, punch and staple holes to top edge, and a couple other light office stamps and notations, otherwise fine condition. Hemingway has made two small holographic corrections to the text.

This correspondence deals with Hemingway’s income from For Whom the Bell Tolls—the author’s most acclaimed novel and an enormous best-seller—and one that reaped “a considerable sum from Chas. Scribner’s Son.” Proceeds continued to roll in for Hemingway after Paramount Pictures bought the film rights, resulting in the 1943 motion picture. Great association between Papa and one of his finest novels. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
