LS in French, signed “Np,” one page, 7.25 x 9, October 21, 1808. Untranslated letter to his Minister of War, the Duc de Feltre, General Henri-Jaques Guillaume Clarke, neatly signed at the conclusion by Napoleon. In fine, clean condition, with central horizontal and vertical fold.
France—and Napoleon—had achieved domination over much of continental Europe by the time this letter was sent to Clarke, who only a year earlier had been appointed minister of war. A year later, Clarke’s role in thwarting the British invasion of the Netherlands led the emperor to grant him the title Duke of Feltre. He continued to serve as Napoleon’s war minister until the end of Bonaparte’s reign in 1814. Desirable letter from the French leader to one of his most trusted allies. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
