German artist (1891–1969) best known for his Expressionist depictions of Weimar society and the brutality of war. ALS in German, one page both sides, 7.5 x 7, December 24, 1948. Letter to an unidentified admirer. In part (translated): “Your kind letter gave me a Christmas present…in February 1949 a larger exhibition of my paintings is opened in Hamburg Commeter, 21 pictures, 27 Lithos, & 20 pastel drawings. I hope to be able to give thereby a further insight into my work in recent years […] My greatest war picture is unfortunately disappeared, probably destroyed by the Nazis.” In fine condition, with a central vertical fold, horizontal fold near bottom, and a uniform shade of toning.
