Description

Relaxing at home in Illinois during the 1868 presidential campaign, Grant invites a former staff officer to visit him

ALS, one page, lightly-lined both sides, 5 x 8, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, August 18, 1868. Letter to General C. B. Comstock, his staff officer until 1866. In full: “We find it so pleasant and quiet here I have concluded to remain until about the close of September. I think you would find it agreeable also, and if you are not otherwise more agreeably employed I would like you to come out and remain as long as we do and go back with us. Dent will probably leave soon to go when his wife is to spend the remainder of our vacation.

I did intend to get back to Washington in time to let Buck commence school from the opening. But I have concluded that he required the rest more than the schooling.

All are well and desire to be remembered to you.” At the top of the first page, Grant has crossed out part of the letterhead and written “Galena, Ill.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Grant’s hand. In May 1865, while still serving on Grant's staff, Comstock was called to serve as one of the nine military commissioners to oversee the trial of the conspirators in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Comstock argued for the case to be transferred to a civilian court. He was removed from the commission after his protests, ostensibly because he served on Grant's staff and, because Grant had been a potential target of the conspirators. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
