Description

Howard Hanson

Composer, conductor and musical theorist (1896–1981) who was winner of the Rome, Pulitzer, and Peabody awards. Unsigned handwritten musical manuscript on 38 pages of an 8.5 x 11 notepad, including revisions and corrections to Harmonic Materials of Modern Music: Resources of the Tempered Scale, published in 1960. The manuscript, mainly in pencil, consists of numerous charts, lists of pitches, formulas of various kinds, and one page of handwritten notations. Hanson apparently intended to publish this material in a new edition of the work which was never completed. In part: “In saving the art we must be careful not to kill the child while rescuing it. Rock + Roll vs. Symphony. Turtle-neck sweaters. Professional vs. Amateur.” Ten of the pages are separated from the notepad. Some creasing, wrinkling, and foxing to one page, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a hardcover First Edition of Harmonic Materials of Modern Music from Hanson’s personal library that includes the published versions of some of the harmonic charts shown in the manuscript. RRAuction COA.
