Grant check signed shortly before his brief tenure as Secretary of War

Bank check, 8.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Grant, payable to Self for $250.00, January 2, 1867. A two-cent revenue stamp is affixed to the top right corner. Revenue stamps were issued by the government as as means to indicate that appropriate fees had been paid. During this time period, the fees were used to pay for various expenses in the aftermath of the Civil War. In fine condition, with several cancellation cuts to body, one slightly touching top of middle initial, and a bank stamp to center. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
