Description

The Brown Bomber visits wounded soldiers in Tokyo shortly after his 1951 retirement

Vintage fountain pen signature on an off-white 5 x 8 sheet. In very good condition, with intersecting folds passing through his name, scattered soiling, and a missing lower right corner. A collector’s notation reads “Tokyo Army Hospital, 16th Nov 1951, ‘Joe Louis.’” The signature could be neatly matted if so desired. Louis was soundly defeated just a few weeks earlier by Rocky Marciano in a fight that effectively ended his professional boxing career, though he would participate in exhibition matches including one in Taiwan a month after visiting Japan. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
