Description

Whitman addresses himself while working for the Treasury Department

Mailing envelope, 5.5 x 3, addressed in Whitman’s hand to himself, “Walt Whitman, Solicitor’s Office Treasury, Washington, D.C.” Removably double matted by corner tabs, with a portrait of Whitman, to an overall size of 11 x 14. In fine condition, with scattered light toning and soiling, not detracting from the bold signature. Whitman held three jobs during his time in Washington, all three as a clerk. His final job was at the newly formed Department of Justice, which was created by merging the offices of the Attorney General and the Solicitor of the Treasury. Whitman is scarce in any form. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
