Prussian-born conductor and composer (1862–1950) who was the longtime leader of the New York Symphony Orchestra. His 1896 opera The Scarlet Letter, adapted from the eponymous novel, was evidently the first such venture based on a work by Hawthorne. Original vintage 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo by Falle of New York, signed twice in fountain pen.
