Description

Very scarce letter from Bogie to his sister while filming The Barefoot Contessa

Very scarce ALS signed “Bogie,” on a 5.75 x 4 glossy postcard of an Italian seaside village, no date, but bearing two Genoa postmarks. Postcard to his sister Pat, written from Italy while filming The Barefoot Contessa. In full: “This is a little village just around the corner from where we are working—very picturesque. Hope you are feeling much better and visiting home.” The address panel of the postcard is addressed in Lauren Bacall’s hand to “Mrs. Frances Rose, 232 South Mapleton Drive, Los Angeles, California Air Mail.” In very good to fine condition, with staining creasing, and several tears to image side, with just a bit of light toning and a couple of small tears to top edge of letter.

Bogart’s younger sister Frances, nicknamed Pat, was a troubled soul who spent much of her adult life in and out of mental institutions. She was a beloved part of the family and Bogie always ensured that she was well taken care of. This rare postcard was originally removed from Pat’s personal scrapbook. A touching and seemingly uncharacteristic glimpse into the softer side of Bogie as the attentive older brother. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
