ALS signed “Charles,” one light blue page, 6 x 8, Long Barn letterhead, May 18, 1937. Letter to a woman whom Lindbergh refers to as “Aunt June,” announcing the birth of his son Land. In full: “We have another boy; born on the evening of May 12th, in London. Anne and the baby are both doing well and are in excellent condition.” In fine condition, with central horizontal and vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, along with a couple other creases (one through a single letter of signature). Accompanied by a mailing envelope, addressed in Lindbergh’s hand to Butler, postmarked August 12, 1935, with corner paper loss from having its stamps removed.
Following the 1932 kidnapping and murder of his infant son by Bruno Richard Hauptmann, Lindbergh became obsessed with privacy, moving to England in 1935 and spending more than a decade without a permanent home. It was while he and his wife were in their self-imposed British exile that they learned of Hauptmann’s 1936 execution in New Jersey—the same year that the aviator made five trips to Germany to investigate and evaluate the air power of the growing Third Reich. During these years, Lindbergh also became focused on creating a large family, with his third son, Land Morrow, born in 1937. It was that joyous occasion that prompted him to send this missive to his aunt, June Lindbergh Butler, informing her of the addition to the family. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
