Description

The 22-year-old Leigh signs a photo from her first theatre starring role in 1935

Lovely and very early vintage pearl-finish 7.5 x 9.5 photo of Leigh as she appeared in her first starring role in the play The Mask of Virtue, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To N. L. Richards, with best wishes, Vivien Leigh 27.9.35.” Photo is affixed to a slightly larger sheet. A few light bends, some scattered light rubbing to surface, and some light silvering to darker areas of image, otherwise fine condition. Cast in the play The Mask of Virtue in 1935; Leigh received excellent reviews followed by interviews and newspaper articles. When the play was moved to a larger theatre, Leigh was found to be unable to project her voice adequately, or to hold the attention of so large an audience, and the play closed soon after. However, film director Alexander Korda attended her opening night performance and signed her to a film contract. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
