Description

President Grant bestows a Mathew Brady portrait during his first term in office

Seated 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet portrait of Grant as president, taken by Mathew Brady (and so stamped on the reverse), signed in black ink, “U. S. Grant.” Notation on reverse in another hand, “Given to E. Jourdan by General Grant 1870.” In very good condition, with light silvering and scuffing, a thin trip of residue along extreme upper edge, and scattered overall spotting.

The 18th president was in his first term when he gifted this image. As the notation on the back refers to Grant by his military rank and not as president, it’s likely that “E. Jourdan” had served with—or at least known of—Grant from his service to the Union. A desirable, highly collectible Brady portrait with military and presidential overtones. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
