Scarce 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet-sized seated portrait of Johnson as president, signed in the lower border in ink. In very good to fine condition, with light rippling primarily to edges and silvering to the darker areas of the image.
Ascending to the presidency following Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, Johnson presided over the United States’ Reconstruction era and came under fire from Republicans who disliked his political position of favoring Southern whites. In spite of his sometimes unfavorable policies—and two attempts at impeachment—Johnson still had his supporters, one of whom secured the 17th president’s signature on this portrait. Johnson signed photos of this size are very uncommon. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
