Description

Rare and desirable Lee signed portrait, transmitted directly from his widow

Unusual 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Lee in suit and bow tie, very nicely signed in black ink, “R. E. Lee.” Also signed and inscribed on the reverse by Lee’s wife, “For my young friend Verner Moore from Mary Custis Lee.” Trimmed edges and rounded top corners, slight vertical crease to lower blank area, and the image itself somewhat faded, otherwise condition is fine. A rare combination of Mr. and Mrs. Lee on a lesser-seen photo of the general. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
