Description

Exceedingly rare signed portrait of the influential naturalist

English naturalist and author (1809–1882) whose book explaining his theories of evolution, On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859), takes a place among the most influential texts in the history of scientific thought. Very rare 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of the elderly Darwin in profile, with “from life copyright Julia Margaret Cameron,” printed under the image, and signed in the lower border in black ink, “Ch. Darwin.” Light soiling to the gold-colored border, otherwise fine condition. A prime example, and only the third Darwin signed photo we have ever offered. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
