Description

An amazing image of Wu Tingfang who served as China’s acting premier for five days in 1917

Chinese diplomat and politician (1842-1922) who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and briefly as Acting Premier during the early years of the Republic of China under Sun Yat Sen. Rare 5 x 7.25 cabinet portrait, by F. Gutekunst of Philadelphia, picturing Wu Tingfang seated in a kimono and holding a fan, with a far away look in eyes. Signed in Chinese characters along the right edge and identified and dated below the image in English in another hand, “Wu Tingfang, Nov. 12 1902.” Light scuffing, trivial scattered foxing, and two small stains to the border, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a small unsigned transmittal card imprinted “Compliments of Sun Yat Sen, 29 rue Moliere, Shanghai, China.” Virtually nonexistent in signed photographs. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
