British general in America during the Revolution. Although he defeated George Washington in a number of battles, he could not force a surrender and returned to England in 1778. Signature, “W. Howe,” on an off-white 2.25 x 1.5 slip clipped from a larger document with three lines of text beneath his name and the date “1777.” Vertical fold passing through his name, scattered soiling and toning, glue residue approaching his first initial, and Howe’s signature somewhat light but legible, otherwise very good condition. A desirable signature from one of the few British leaders to have bested Washington. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
