Description

Madison tends to the decommissioning of naval vessels at the end of the War of 1812 as Monroe heads for London

ALS as president, one page, 7 x 9.5, September 24, 1815. Letter to Mr. Pleasanton. In full: “I have read your letter of the 22d. As the Navy Department can not avail itself of the Neptune, sale of the ship as recommended by Mr. Harrison appears to be the only convenient disposition that can be made of it. I have sent to Mr. Graham of the War Dept. the letter of Col. Humphrey’s. It may be well for you to explain to him the extent of the subject of it. Mr. Monroe is to be here in a day or two on his way to London thence to Washington.”

Double matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Madison and a small caption, to an overall size of 18 x 15.5. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a horizontal fold directly under signature.

Madison sent this letter six months after the end of the War of 1812, as the government began to decommission several of its naval ships in preparation for creating a larger, stronger navy. In the midst of such actions, the president notes that his recently reappointed secretary of state, James Monroe, would soon be traveling to London as the two nations worked to restore diplomatic relations. Interesting context as the nation looks to ultimately bolster its fleet on the high seas while mentioning his immediate successor. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
