ALS as president signed “M Van Buren,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, July 15, 1840. Letter to Mr. Butler, perhaps Benjamin Butler. In full: “The enclosed letter from John will explain the tax I want to impose on your friendship. Have written to John to explain the matter to you on his way down which will be in a few days. With kind regards to Mrs. B.” Matted and framed with a portrait of Van Buren and a small caption, to an overall size of 21.5 x 16.5. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a bit of scattered light toning. With his administration characterized by economic hardship and international difficulties, Van Buren was voted out of office after four years, with a close popular vote, but a rout in the electoral vote. A presentable Van Buren presidential letter. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
