TLS, signed in pencil, one page both sides, 7.25 x 10.5, Arcane Ridge letterhead, May 11, 1941. Letter to veterinarian Dr. DeVita. In full: “A most grateful letter has been in my thoughts for you ever since Kenzan-go bounded into my room a month ago and almost smothered me with his joy in coming home, but I have delayed it so that I might be sure of good news to please you.
Kenzan-go is much better than he was the first week or two. He coughs still, but he eats well, sleeps quietly and looks contented. As he trots by my side on our daily walks, it is a delight to sink my hand in his glossy, sun-warmed fur, to feel the strength and beauty of form and limb and the lordly wave of his tail. Tense with interest he sniffs at every step and explores every tree and bush we pass, and it is good to know he enjoys life. I cannot thank you with mere words for the endless trouble you have taken to improve my darling’s health, but with my heart I do.
As an utterly inadequate return for your goodness to us both, will you accept the books I have autographed, also a copy of Nella Braddy’s ‘Anne Sullivan Macy.’ They will at least convey to you my appreciation of one who truly loves dogs and spares no effort to heal their many woes.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning, and light show-through of Keller’s bold signature on reverse. Letter is housed in a maroon half morocco drop-box, gilt-stamped brown leather title labels in three compartments on spine with five raised bands.
During a 1937 tour of Japan, Keller was presented with a three-month-old Akita puppy, which she promptly adopted as her guide dog. After the pup suddenly died of distemper, the Japanese government arranged for its ‘brother’ named Kenzan-go to be given to Keller, with the new Akita becoming not only a symbol of good will by the Japanese people but also her faithful companion. The bond between dog and master clearly grew stronger with each passing day, and Keller here expresses the joy any pet owner would upon the recovery of their four-legged companion. “It is good to know he enjoys life. I cannot thank you with mere words for the endless trouble you have taken to improve my darling’s health, but with my heart I do.” Keller’s truthful sentiment is one shared by countless others through the years.
