American soldier and actor (1924–1971) whose heroism during World War II earned him the Medal of Honor. After the war, Murphy parlayed his popularity, small-town charm, and baby-faced good looks into a respectable film career, appearing in a string of westerns and war dramas. He died in a plane crash at the age of 46. Signed book: To Hell And Back. First edition, first printing. NY: Henry Holt and Company, 1949. Hardcover with dustjacket, 5.5 x 8.25, 274 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page, “To Robert E. Moore, Sr., World War I—His two sons, Robert E. Moore, Jr., Thomas L. Moore, Pacific service 1942-48, Audie Murphy, Feb-11-49.” In very good condition, with toning and soiling to the signed page, scattered toning and foxing to inside pages and pastedowns, separation along back hinge, scattered cover wear and partial separations, cloth loss, and small hole to spine. Dustjacket shows light wear, soiling and creasing. In his autobiography, Murphy did not once mention any of the many decorations he received for his incredible combat exploits. Instead, he chose to praise the skills, bravery, and dedication of the other soldiers in his platoon, which is reflected in this book’s inscription. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
