Description

Coltrane’s original music manuscript

Saxophonist, band leader, and composer (1926–1967) whose brilliant improvisatory skills and experimental spirit made him one of the most influential and highly regarded musicians in the history of jazz. After playing tenor and soprano sax with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk, he led his own groups and made such classic recordings as “Giant Steps,” “My Favorite Things,” and “A Love Supreme.” He died of liver cancer at the age of 41. Unsigned music manuscript on a partial sheet of preprinted staff paper, measuring 9.5 x 12.5. Coltrane writes out several musical intervals in pencil, then tracing over each one in ink, perhaps realizing these were some of the basic building blocks for musical theory. Reverse bears Coltrane estate’s “2005 Jowcol Music” copyright ink stamp. In fine condition, with paper loss to top right portion of page, scattered creasing and wrinkling, some light soiling, and a few edge tears. Document was originally acquired from Guernsey’s February 2005 Jazz Auction. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
