Description

Paying the drama coach she once described as the most brilliant man she ever met

Bank check, 5.75 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Monroe, payable to Mr. M. Chekhov for $30.00, November 1954. Check is also endorsed on the reverse by Chekhov, A central vertical fold, one through a single letter of signature, cancellation holes to left side, and light show-through from stamps on reverse, otherwise fine condition. Michael Chekhov (1891–1955) became Monroe’s drama coach in 1951 and thereafter exerted a profound influence on her career. According to the standard reference The Unabridged Marilyn: Her Life from A to Z, Monroe acknowledged him as the most brilliant man she ever met. The writing is fully legible, and the highly significant association grants the present item a special cachet shared by precious few of Monroe’s surviving checks. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
