Signed book: Gone With the Wind. First edition, later printing. NY: Macmillan Company, 1936. Hardcover with dustjacket, 6 x 9, 1037 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page, “To Dorothy Crosland, who remembers Frances Newman and her circle with as many fond recollections as Margaret Mitchell.” In very good condition, with toning and foxing to the signed page, with light foxing to following pages and mild toning to inside pages, ownership signature (”Evelyn Henley Crosland, October 1, 1936”) to inside front cover, scattered wear to the boards, and soiling and two heavy vertical creases to the spine. The dust jacket (not original, but from a later printing) exhibits overall handling wear, creases and small tears, and areas of chipping and paper loss (including a chip to the Confederate flag on the spine). Both Crosland and Newman were librarians who assisted Mitchell in the historical research of the book. Due to overwhelming demands upon her, Mitchell signed copies of Gone With the Wind only for a short time after publication, even denying friends and relatives; inscribed copies are thus quite uncommon.
